Connecting doctoral researchers across metabolic disease research

Two of the prestigious awards at the Helmholtz Munich Diabetes Conference! The 13th Helmholtz Munich Diabetes Conference, held under the theme “Diabetes Across the Lifespan,” brought together researchers from around the world to discuss diabetes and metabolic health across different stages of life—from early development and pregnancy to obesity, precision medicine and healthy ageing. The programme combined scientific presentations, flash talks, poster sessions and opportunities for informal exchange and networking.

For doctoral candidates working in metabolic disease research, such meetings provide an important opportunity to exchange ideas beyond their individual research topics, establish connections with peers and researchers from different disciplines, and identify potential avenues for future collaboration. These interactions are particularly relevant to MEDIculous REMeDy, where 15 doctoral candidates will investigate different aspects of metabolic disease heterogeneity, prevention and remission using complementary approaches including multi-omics, advanced disease models, patient data and AI.

The international scope of the conference also reflects the broader challenge addressed by the Doctoral Network. Obesity, type 1 and type 2 diabetes and their complications are global health challenges, while their underlying mechanisms and disease trajectories can differ substantially between individuals. Addressing this heterogeneity requires collaboration across disciplines, countries and sectors. MEDIculous REMeDy brings together partners from across Europe and beyond, creating an environment in which doctoral candidates can develop their research while building an international scientific network around precision prevention and remission of metabolic disease.
